Mysore-style yoga is a traditional, self-paced method of practicing Ashtanga yoga that originated in Mysore, India. It is unique because students practice independently, following the sequence of postures (asanas) they have learned, while the teacher offers individualized guidance and adjustments as needed.
Unlike a led class, where the instructor leads the entire group through the sequence, in Mysore-style classes, each student practices at their own pace, according to their skill level and familiarity with the practice. The teacher provides support by helping students refine their technique, deepen their practice, and progressively add new postures.
This style is named after the city of Mysore, where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the teacher who popularized Ashtanga Yoga, taught students. Mysore-style yoga fosters independence and encourages self-awareness, making it a great choice for students looking to deepen their practice at their own rhythm while still benefiting from personalized attention.
